NOPD: Murder Down, Other Crimes Up 2014
Posted August 29th, 2014 @ 3:33pm

The NOPD reports that the number of murders in the city decreased in the first half of the year compared to the same period in 2013, but crimes of opportunity increased.

While the number of homicides dropped by 8%, there were more robberies, burglaries and thefts in the first 6 months of the year.

71 murders were reported in the first half of the year compared with 77 during the same period last year.

There were 479 armed robberies in the first six months of 2014, up 37% from 350 in 2013.  Simple robbery was up 35%.

Thefts increased by 15% to 5,056 and auto thefts were up 22% to 1,209 in the first half of the year.  Burglaries were up by just under 4%.

The number of assaults was 987, up 31% from 2013.

“We are working every day to ensure that every neighborhood in New Orleans is a safe neighborhood," said NOPD Superintendent Michael Harrison. "There is no question that putting more officers on our streets is a major part of the solution."
